Art Center Workshops & Master Classes

Our workshops and master classes take place in the Currier Art Center, the Currier Museum of Art, and on special off-site locations on selected Saturdays and Sundays throughout the term. These courses are geared toward students, teachers, and parents with children, who are seeking specialized programs in a variety of media.

Create a comic book about your own family! Use pictures and text to create engaging graphic narratives from the stories only YOU can tell. Parents and children interview each other and retell the stories they learn in comics form. In this workshop, you will learn to choose and cut mats with confidence as you discover the basics of mat design, types of mat, and how to cut single and double mats. Using wire and some sheet metal, we will bend, twist, wrap, coil and hammer delightful earrings that you can wear. Using a variety of wire, mostly copper, brass, and silver, we will use a few hand tools to shape the wire into curlicues, squiggles, and hoops; and by incorporating beads, we can add color. No prior jewelry experience needed and the instructor will provide all the tools and wire needed. (Bring a lunch.)

Do you want to create high resolution digital images of your artwork for submittal to galleries, contests or magazines? Do you have Photoshop or a similar photo editing program, but can't get the results that you want? This workshop will help you learn basic Photoshop skills essential for producing professional, high quality prints and files, including color management, resolution, sizing, file formats and outputting to print and the web. We will also review relevant photo examples and solutions to common photo manipulation problems. (Instructor will host class using a laptop with projector. It is recommended that students bring a laptop to class loaded with Photoshop and artwork photos. If students to not have a laptop, the class still works as a demonstration. This one day workshop will demonstrate how to make wonderful chains using just wire, a few hand tools, and your imagination. Chains such as Egyptian spiral, Viking (knitted), wire-wrapped links with beads, and basic link chains will be covered. Using 14g to 26g round wire, we will wrap, bend, knit, hammer and spiral our way to making your own chain samples, and a chain to be worn by the end of the day. (Materials provided.) Inspired by the fall exhibition Semblances of Life: Paintings by Bruce McColl at the Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center, Saint Anselm College, students will discover the virtues of painterly watercolor and pastel painting while working from the figure. Rooted in the traditions of modernism, and inspired by painters such as Van Gogh, Matisse, and DeKooning, Bruce will challenge students to broaden their perspective on the figurative tradition using fauvist color and cubist structures. Students will work expressively with these pure and rich media while pushing their skills to new painterly heights. The course is suited for students with experience in pastel or watercolor painting.
